Tapestry of Individual Memories, Experiences, and Salutations

for Teck Whye Primary School

I was commissioned by Teck Whye Primary School to create artwork and artistic direction for its Heritage Gallery project, T.I.M.E.S. (Tapestry of Individual Memories, Experiences, and Salutations). This project was supported and funded by the National Heritage Board (NHB). A total of 50 pieces, in both digital and traditional formats, were created after extensive research into archival material and close collaboration with the school leaders.

For example, this piece above showcases landmarks from the major periods of Singapore's educational landscape, as referenced from this research paper. The initial Survival-Driven phase that was dependent on entrepôt trade, expanding industrialisation, racial harmony and learning of English and Mother Tongue (students holding textbooks at the 'old school' school), and vocational education (the old campus of Singapore Polytechnic); next, the Efficiency-Driven phase to bolster multi-national corporations such as Texas Instruments and Seiko, through tertiary institutions like the revamped ITE and NUS; next, the Ability-Driven phase encapsulated by the metaphorical broadening of road lanes, the proliferation of art and music, and establishment of innovation and technology hubs such as Biopolis; lastly, the present pivot towards Character-Driven education as embodied in gracious acts towards and for society. Throughout, embroidery-related motifs are woven in to recall T.I.M.E.S.'s cohesive tapestry theme.

This was an incredibly enriching endeavour and collaboration as Teck Whye Primary School granted me significant artistic freedom to incorporate my beliefs of pro-diversity and pro-disability representation. It gives me the greatest of delights to know that students will see visual representations of everyday Singaporeans of diverse ethnic/cultural heritages, body shapes, and abilities/disabilities.
